Samarth Ramdas Mahasamadhi - Guru of Veer Shivaji


Sajjanagad in parali district is the hill top fort where Samartha Ramadas, the Guru of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj lived and attained Maha Samadhi in the 17th century.

He was born on the Ram Navami day in 1608 to Suryaji Pant and Ranubai, in the Jamb village of Aurangabad on the banks of the Godavari. His childhood name was Suryaji Thosar.

He avoid marriage and took up a life of an ascetic. He initially went to Nashik and did penance for a period of 12 years. He followed the Madhukari Sampradaya.

He travelled all over Maharashtra building temples of Lord Hanuman and installing Ram Bhakti in the minds of people. Being an ardent advaitin, he wrote a Marathi book called Dasbodh explaining adavaita in simple language. He gave mantra updadesaha to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in chapal in 1649.

In 1676, he moved to Sajjanagad and took up continious japa for the Ram taraka mantra. Samarth Ramdas he attained Mahasamadhi in Sajjangad on 22nd January 1682
