There are two places named aduthurai near Kumbakonam - One is Vadakurangaduthurai and the other is Tenkurangaduthurai. Both of them have two ancient Shiva temples.
This article is about Tenkurangaduthurai Shiva temple which is 3 Kms from Tiruvidaimaruthur and 13 kms from Kumbakonam. The temple is more than 1000 year old self manifested Shiva Linga known as Abathsahayeshwar (meaning - "The Lord who helps one in danger").
History:
There are numerous inscriptions in this temple about the donations and the work done by kings including the Chola Kings.
