Sheetala Devi temple – Lucknow, UP

Location – Lucknow was famously known as LakshmanPuri during the times of Ramayana. It is believed that the city was brought into existence by Shree Lakshman.

Main Deity – Maa Sheetala is considered an incarnation of Shakti. She is another form of Goddess Durga  and Parvati.

Specialty – The temple was ruined by invaders and was brought back to life by a local businessman, who found the Devi idol in a nearby water tank.

The temple has a two lion statues at the door. There is a third one too at the entrance.

Raja  Tikait Rai, the then  Diwan of Nawab, foresaw the construction of this temple. He also constructed a large pond in the vicinity. The pond has to be accessed by few downward going stairs.  Till date, this pond is called “Tikait Rai ka Talab’.
Festivals and Prayers – This temple is mainly visited by newlyweds and couples hoping to seek blessings for their relationship. Parents also take their newborns to this temple since it is considered auspicious. Devotees believe that Sheetala Devi cures diseases. She is considered as the deity for eradication of diseases , especially small pox.

The famous “Aatho ka Mela” which takes place every year during Holi, is a major tourist attraction.

Sheetal Ashtami is a major festival here. The specialty of this festival is that on this day, the Goddess is served stale prasad.
