Tripura – Tripurasundari Temple – Matabari

The north east state of Tripura derives its name from this temple – Tripurasundari Temple. This is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths. It is located in Udaipur about 55 Kms from Agartala.This is popularly known as Matabari. There are two deities inside the Bengali styled temple – Tripura Sundari (shoroshi) and Choti Ma. This temple is also called as Kurma Pitha since it resembles a Tortoise.

Tripura Sundari is one of the main deities in the SriVidya traditional of Goddess worship. It can be inferred from the temples spread across India – Tripura Sundari temple in Tripura to Tripurasundari temple in Marundeeswarar (Tiruvanmiyur), Chennai to the Mahalakshmi Temple in Mumbai. Even though it is called as Mahalakshmi temple, there are 3 deities – Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasarawathi with a Sri Yantra in front. Usually a Sri Yantra is mounted on top of a tortoise which is symbolic of the universal force holding the entire world.

There are numerous inscriptions inside the temple which point to the popularity of the shrine and the attention paid to it by the kings. The temple’s holy pond is the Kalyan Sagar which is a huge lake where consider as sacred. They also feed the fish and tortoises in this pond. The best time to visit the temple would during Diwali where the annual fair is conducted.
